Why I Don’t Use Proprietary Blends (And Never Will)

Why I Don’t Use Proprietary Blends (And Never Will)

This is personal for me. More personal than most things I write about.

Before I created URICAH, I spent years shopping for supplements. Trying to find something, anything, that would help me manage my uric acid levels without being chained to prescription medication for the rest of my life.

I kept running into the same problem.

The Moment That Changed Everything

I’d pick up a supplement. The front of the bottle looked great. “Uric Acid Support.” “Joint Health Formula.” “Natural Relief.” All the right words.

Then I’d flip it over and look at the label.

“Proprietary Blend: 500mg.” Followed by a list of ten or twelve ingredients with no individual dosages.

Every single time.

I’d stand there in the shop thinking: how am I supposed to know if this is going to work? How much tart cherry is in here? Is there 200mg or 5mg? Is the turmeric actually dosed high enough to do anything, or is it just there so they can put it on the front of the bottle?

I couldn’t tell.

That was the whole point. I wasn’t supposed to be able to tell.

And that made me angry.

Why It Made Me Angry

Because I wasn’t buying a t-shirt. I was buying something I was putting in my body every day to manage a real health problem.

I deserved to know what was in it.

These companies were asking me to hand over my money, swallow their capsules, and just trust them. Trust that the ingredients were dosed properly. Trust that they hadn’t cut corners to save money. Trust that the label meant something.

If they were so proud of their formula, why were they hiding it?

The answer is that most of them weren’t proud of it. They were hiding cheap dosages behind a single number because the economics worked in their favour. List impressive ingredients, dose them low, charge a premium, and rely on the fact that most consumers don’t know how to read a supplement label.

I knew right then that if I ever created my own supplement, it would never use a proprietary blend.

What Transparency Costs Me

Here’s the thing nobody in the supplement industry talks about: transparent labelling has a real cost.

When I list every ingredient and every dosage on the URICAH label, I’m giving competitors my entire formula. Anyone can look at it, copy it, and try to undercut me on price. There’s no trade secret. No hidden advantage. Just the formula, right there in black and white.

I don’t care.

Let them copy it. Because the people who buy URICAH aren’t buying a mystery. They’re buying a product they can verify. They can look at each ingredient, compare the dosage to the published research, and decide for themselves whether it’s worth taking.

That’s how it should work.

You shouldn’t need to trust a company. You should be able to check.

The cost to me is that I compete on a level playing field. I can’t hide behind a blend name and hope nobody notices the dosages are low. Every ingredient has to justify its place in the formula at a meaningful dose. That’s more expensive to manufacture.

It’s the only way I’m willing to do it.

My Promise

When I created URICAH, I made a simple promise: every ingredient, every dosage, on the label. Full stop.

That promise hasn’t changed since day one.

It never will.

Not if a competitor undercuts me. Not if manufacturing costs go up. Not if some marketing consultant tells me I’d sell more units with a flashier blend name and less transparency.

URICAH has 14 ingredients. Every single one is listed with its exact amount. You can see them all on the label. You can check them against the research. You can make an informed decision.

That’s a principle. And principles don’t bend when it gets inconvenient.

What This Means for You

If you’re shopping for a supplement right now, here’s my one piece of advice: flip the bottle over.

If you see “Proprietary Blend” followed by a single number and a list of ingredients, put it back on the shelf. You have no idea what you’re actually getting. Neither does the person selling it to you in most cases.

Look for products that list every ingredient individually with its dosage.

Then do five minutes of research to see if those dosages match what the studies actually use. It requires a label that’s willing to show you the truth.

I’m not the only supplement company that does transparent labelling. In the uric acid space, it’s rarer than it should be. Most of what you’ll find online or in health stores uses proprietary blends.

Now you know why.

This Is Why I Do What I Do

I created URICAH for myself first. I needed something that worked, and I needed to know exactly what I was putting in my body.

Over 2,200 customers and a 4.85/5 average rating later, I know the approach is right. Not because the marketing is clever, but because the product is honest.

People can see what they’re taking. They can verify it. And they can feel confident that what’s on the label is what’s in the capsule.

No proprietary blends. No fairy dusting. No hidden dosages. Ever.

That’s my line, and I’m not crossing it.
